Electronic voice phenomena

Sounds on recordings interpreted as voices, not heard at the time of recording. Popularised by Konstantin Raudive (1971).

Proponent view

Some recordings contain apparently meaningful words in reply to questions asked. Investigators use controlled rooms and multiple recorders. (Meridian)

Skeptical view

Radio interference, cross-modulation, and above all pareidolia: the brain hears words in noise, especially when told what to listen for. Play a sample to listeners without the transcript and the "words" vanish. (Rook)
